Today, State Senator Brad Hoylman (D-Chelsea, Midtown) will be hosting a press conference in honor of the Trans Day of Remembrance.

At the conference, Hoylman will pay respects to the transgender people we’ve lost as a result of transphobic violence. He will also be discussing his State Senate bill, S.2253, which would repeal the section of penal law relating to loitering for the purpose of prostitution. Hoylman argues that this law has been used as a cudgel against trans women, criminalizing “walking while trans”.

Yesterday, City Council Speaker Corey Johnson (D-Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen) and Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) announced that the City has achieved a pathway to pay parity between early childhood education teachers and entry-rate Department of Education salaries by October 2021.

By announcing this pathway, the Mayor and City Council have completed the promise they made to the provider community in June. Certified teachers will see gradual wage increases beginning in October 2019 with parity achieved in October 2021.

“I am thrilled to announce the final of several deals, promised as part of this year’s budget agreement, to put these community-based educators on the path to pay parity,” said Johnson. “This took a lot of hard work, and I thank DC37 and the de Blasio administration for being partners in this process. I’d also like to thank the advocacy groups for holding us accountable to make this happen including the Campaign for Children led by the Citizens Committee for Children, United Neighborhood Houses, FPWA and UJA. The Council will continue to fight for the rights of working people throughout the five boroughs.”
