State Senator Brad Hoylman (D-Chelsea, Midtown) and Assemblymember Yuh-Line Niou (D-LES, Chinatown) held a press conference last Friday to urge passage of the Robocall Prevention Act.

The Robocall Prevention Act would effectively ban unwanted robocalls in the state of New York by requiring phone service providers to provide free blocking technology to their customers. It would also allow New Yorkers to revoke their consent to receive robocalls and penalize robocallers for violating that request.

“There isn’t an issue I hear more about from constituents than the proliferation of robocalls,” said Hoylman. “These calls aren’t just annoying—they’re dangerous, and often used to defraud unsuspecting consumers, seniors, and vulnerable New Yorkers.”

Council Member Keith Powers (D-Carnegie Hill, Yorkville) released a statement last Thursday on the need to close Rikers Island.

The statement followed a hearing from the Subcommittee on Landmarks, Public Siting and Maritime Uses on the de Blasio Administration’s plan to close Rikers Island and open borough-based jails.

“Today’s hearing is a reminder of the urgent need to close Rikers Island,” said Powers. “As Chair of the Criminal Justice Committee, I know how imperative it is that we do this right. With this plan and process, we can do more than site locations, but can make transformative reforms that change people’s lives.”
